Terms of Use

Last updated: October 28, 2026

These terms explain the rules for using Star Dictionary (stardict.org). They are written in plain English, and by using this site you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.

About This Site

Star Dictionary is an independent words reference. We publish entries and articles on word meanings, origins, idioms, slang and translations. When these terms say “we,” “us” or “our,” they mean the people who run this site. “You” means anyone who visits or reads it.

Using Our Content

Everything on this site is for personal, non-commercial use. You are welcome to:

  • Read, browse and search entries as often as you like
  • Quote short passages with credit to Star Dictionary, for example in a school essay, a blog post or a social media discussion
  • Print or save a page for your own reference

Please don’t do the following without our written permission:

  • Copy entries or articles in bulk, or republish them elsewhere
  • Use our definitions, example sentences or etymologies to build a competing dictionary, word list, app or dataset
  • Sell, license or otherwise make money from our content
  • Remove or change any credit or copyright notice

Our original writing, explanations, example sentences and site design belong to us. Some material, such as quotations from published works, belongs to its original authors and appears here for reference and commentary.

Not Professional Advice

Our content helps you understand words. It is not professional advice of any kind.

  • Translations are offered as a general guide to meaning. They are not certified translations and should not be relied on for legal documents, contracts, medical instructions, immigration papers or anything else where precision matters. Use a qualified translator for those.
  • Legal, medical, financial and technical terms are explained in everyday language. A definition of a legal or medical word is not legal or medical advice.
  • Usage guidance reflects common practice. Style rules vary between publishers, schools and organisations, so follow the guide your teacher, employer or editor requires.

Accuracy and Changes to Content

We work hard to get things right, and we check our entries against reliable references. Language still moves quickly. Slang changes meaning, new words appear, and word histories are sometimes disputed or uncertain. For that reason:

  • We don’t guarantee that every entry is complete, current or error-free
  • Word origins marked as uncertain or disputed are presented that way on purpose
  • We may update, correct, expand or remove any content at any time without notice

If you spot a mistake, we would genuinely like to hear about it.

Slang and Offensive Language

A dictionary records how people actually speak. Some entries cover slang, swear words, slurs and other offensive terms so readers can understand what they mean and why they cause harm. Including a word is not an endorsement of it. Where a term is offensive, we try to say so clearly and explain its context.

External Links

Some pages may point to other websites for further reading. We don’t control those sites and aren’t responsible for their content, accuracy, privacy practices or availability. Visiting them is your choice, and their own terms apply once you leave this site.

Trademarks

Product names, brand names, company names and logos that appear on this site belong to their respective owners. We mention them for reference, for example when explaining a word that comes from a brand name or a trademark that has entered everyday language. Their appearance here doesn’t mean those owners endorse or are connected with Star Dictionary.

Acceptable Use

We want this site to stay fast, free and available to everyone. When you use it, you agree not to:

  • Use automated tools, bots or scrapers to copy content or collect data in bulk
  • Send traffic designed to overload, disrupt or slow down the site
  • Try to access parts of the site, servers or systems that aren’t meant to be public
  • Upload or transmit viruses, malware or other harmful code
  • Use the site for anything illegal, or in a way that harms other people
  • Pretend to be Star Dictionary or suggest you speak on our behalf

We may block access for anyone who breaks these rules.

Availability

We aim to keep the site running smoothly, but we can’t promise it will always be available, uninterrupted or free of technical problems. We may change, pause or discontinue any part of the site at any time.

Limitation of Liability

In plain words: this site is provided “as is.” We offer it free of charge and in good faith, but we can’t accept responsibility for losses that come from using it.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from:

  • Relying on any definition, translation, etymology or other content on this site
  • Errors, omissions or out-of-date information
  • The site being unavailable, slow or interrupted
  • Content on any external website
  • Viruses or other harmful material that may reach your device despite reasonable precautions

Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have that cannot legally be limited, such as rights under consumer protection law where you live.

Privacy

Using this site may involve some information being collected, for example through cookies or basic analytics. How we handle that information is explained in our Privacy Policy.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time, for instance when we add new features or when the law changes. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. If you keep using the site after an update, that means you accept the revised terms. We suggest checking back now and then.
