About Star Dictionary

Star Dictionary is an independent reference for people who want to know what words mean, where they came from and how to use them well. We explain definitions, origins, idioms, slang, synonyms, grammar and translations in plain language, with examples you can actually use.

What Star Dictionary Is

Star Dictionary, found at stardict.org, is a new online publication about language. We write about words the way a curious, well-read friend would: clearly, accurately and without talking down to anyone.

Every page tries to answer the question you came with, and then give you a little more context so the answer sticks.

What You’ll Find Here

Word meanings

Clear definitions for everyday words, tricky words and words that have more than one sense. Where a word is easy to misuse, we say so and show the difference with real example sentences.

Origins and etymology

Where a word or phrase comes from, how its meaning shifted over time, and which popular origin stories don’t hold up. When the true origin is unknown or disputed, we tell you that plainly instead of picking the most entertaining story.

Idioms and phrases

What expressions like “bite the bullet” or “the whole nine yards” mean today, how they’re used, and what’s known about how they started.

Slang explained

Current and older slang, internet language and regional expressions, explained in context. We note when a term is informal, dated, region-specific or likely to cause offense, so you know where it fits.

Synonyms and word choice

Lists of alternatives are only half the job. We explain the shades of difference between similar words so you can pick the one that fits your sentence and your tone.

Grammar and usage help

Practical answers to common questions: commonly confused words, spelling, punctuation, plurals and the rules people argue about. We separate firm rules from style preferences.

Translations

How words and phrases carry across languages, including cases where a direct translation misses the meaning or the tone.

Word-game tools

Help for word puzzles and games, built to make solving easier and to teach you a few new words along the way.

Word of the day

A regularly featured word with its meaning, origin and an example of it in use. It’s a short, easy way to build your vocabulary.

What Star Dictionary Is Not

Our name is similar to an existing project, so we want to be completely clear.

Star Dictionary is not the StarDict dictionary software project. We are not connected to that project, its developers or its contributors in any way.

That means:

  • We do not offer dictionary software of any kind.
  • We do not provide dictionary files, data packs or downloads.
  • We cannot offer support, installation help or troubleshooting for StarDict or any related program.

If you are looking for that software, you will need to go to that project directly. Star Dictionary is a separate, independent publication focused entirely on written articles and reference pages about words.

How We Write

A few principles guide every page we publish:

  • Accuracy comes first. We check meanings and origins against established dictionaries and scholarly references before publishing.
  • Uncertainty is stated honestly. Many word origins are guesses dressed up as facts. When the evidence is thin, we say so.
  • Examples are realistic. Example sentences should sound like something a real person would say or write.
  • Usage over judgment. We describe how language is actually used and flag where it matters, such as formal writing or sensitive terms, without lecturing.
  • Plain language. Explanations about words should be easy to read. We avoid jargon, and when a technical term is useful, we define it.

Who This Site Is For

Star Dictionary is for anyone who stops mid-sentence to wonder about a word. That includes students checking a definition, writers choosing between two similar words, English learners puzzling over an idiom, puzzle fans stuck on a clue, and people who simply enjoy knowing why we say the things we say.

Independent and Growing

Star Dictionary is new and independently run. We are not affiliated with any dictionary publisher, software project or language institution.

The site is growing steadily, with new entries and explanations added over time. If you spot an error or think an entry could be clearer, we welcome corrections and will review them carefully. Getting words right is the whole point.

Who writes here

Star Dictionary is written by a small team of writers, each covering their own part of the site, and every article is fact-checked by our standards editor before it is published.

Rosalind Petrie

Rosalind Petrie writes Star Dictionary’s guides to word meanings, origins, idioms and usage, from everyday definitions and pronunciation to commonly confused words and grammar questions. She checks each entry against established dictionaries, historical citation records and usage guides, and she cares about giving readers clear examples they can actually use in a sentence. Read Rosalind’s articles

Joaquin Aldana

Joaquin Aldana covers slang, viral phrases, translations and word tools, including texting abbreviations, emoji meanings, Wordle-style help and dictionary apps such as GoldenDict and KOReader. He traces new slang to real, dated examples of use, checks translations against bilingual dictionaries and official app documentation, and flags regional differences so readers know when and where a word fits. Read Joaquin’s articles

Maureen Talbot, Standards Editor

Maureen Talbot is Star Dictionary’s standards editor and fact-checks every article before publication against the sources cited, from dictionary entries and etymology records to official app documentation. Anything she cannot confirm is corrected, labelled as unconfirmed or removed, so readers can trust that each definition, origin story and translation on the site holds up.
